A rather much delayed post – to a rather much delayed trip – out to Geneva on the Lake, a vacation spot (in fact Ohio’s oldest resort town), that sits only an hour from my hometown but took me 33 years to get to! And what a pity it took me that long, as it turned out to be a wonderful way to spend the weekend.
Willow Lake Campground
Being that I’m now back at home in Ohio, I was able to take this trip with my parents (and dog!) in their brand new 5th wheel trailer. I can’t remember the last time I stayed in a trailer. If you know me well, you know I opt for a tent or the back seat of my car. So this change was definitely a welcomed luxury! We stayed at Willow Lake Campground, a short 5 minute drive from ‘the strip’ that I highly recommend for it’s peacefulness, friendliness and cleanliness. There were even walking trails through the woods – score for this nature lover!

Hitting the Strip:
Sunrise Cafe
Sunrise Cafe was rated top of the list for breakfast spots in town. The food is cheap, good (coffee not so much – but I am a bit of a snob), and plentiful, and comes with a side of sarcasm. It’s a place where the locals hang out and truly has that ‘down-home diner’ feel. The staff was quick-witted and hilarious and it was a great way to begin our first day in town.
Firehouse Winery
While we didn’t end up eating or drinking at the iconic Firehouse Winery (or riding the Ferris Wheel – party poopers!), we did explore the property and roam the Farmer’s Market they hold there each weekend.
Eddie’s Grill
Eddie’s Grill, serving up classic 50’s style American fare, is a must when visiting the strip. While we didn’t partake this time around (opted for farm-to-table lake-front seating at Crosswinds Grille instead), it’s definitely on the list for next time.

Nearby:
Geneva State Park
Geneva State Park was full for the weekend when we went to book our camping spot, but that didn’t stop us from driving in and exploring the walking/biking trails and the beach.
Ashtabula, Ohio
On our way home I made a special request to stop in at the small town of Ashtabula, Ohio. Quaint shops and restaurants line the tiny street and a trail leads to the above viewpoint. The bridge seen in the background raises and lowers often to let boats pass underneath. A nice way to pass the afternoon and a good ending to our weekend away at Geneva on the Lake. Don’t wait 33 years like I did to get up there!
